There lived a woodcutter in a village. One day he was cutting wood in jungle near a river. Suddenly his axe fell into the river. The river was very deep and the woodcutter did not know how to swim. He was very sad and sitting there with a heavy heart. He was very poor and not has enough money to buy another axe.
He was thinking what to do. He was very depressed and blaming himself for putting the axe inside water. Suddenly, he heard a voice and saw an angel appeared before him. The angel asked him why he was crying. He told her everything and the angel took pity on him. She went into the river and came back with a golden axe. She asked the woodcutter if it was his axe. The woodcutter replied “No”.
She then again went into the water and returned with a silver one. This time also the woodcutter refused to take it. Finally, she brought the axe of the woodcutter from the water. The woodcutter was delighted to get back his iron axe. The angel became very pleased with the woodcutter at his honesty and gave him the two valuable gold and silver axes as reward.
Woodcutter went to his village and told the entire story to his neighbor. His neighbor was greedy and went nearer to the same river. He threw his axe inside water and started waiting for the angel to appear. After a while the same angel appeared and he lied to the angel that his axe fell in river. Angel went inside river and brings back his iron axe. The greedy man said, “No, this is not mine”. Next time angel brought a silver axe and the man refused to take thinking of getting the valuable golden axe. This time angel went inside water and never returned back and the greedy man lost his own iron axe too.
Honesty is the best policy and always rewarded. Being greedy will make you loose whatever you already have.
